On this page of our Disco Elysium guide, you can find a detailed description of the Perform field autopsy task. Here we explain the most important steps before and during the autopsy, where to find and how to use chaincutters to progress in the task, and how to unlock new quests related to the hanged man's body.
Unlocking the task
This is one of the tasks involving the hanged man found in the back area of Whirling-in-Rags. To be able to start this task, you need to first complete the Getting the body down task - we described it on a separate page of our guide.
Only after the corpse has been removed from the tree, you can talk to Kim about examining it.
Autopsy
Approach the corpse, talk to Kim, and start your investigation. You can optionally wear gloves - you can get them from the gardener who can be found south of the hostel entrance. In addition, consider searching the nearby dumpster before initiating the autopsy.
During the inspection, you can try to cut off the belt and to perform this action, you need to pass the Physical Instrument skill check. Chaincutters can help you cut off the belt - you can find them in Kim's car parked south of here (look in the glove box in the car). With Chaincutters, your chances of passing the check increase to 80% (we recommend saving the game and reloading it if the check fails).
Successfully completing all actions related to the autopsy leads to unlocking two new tasks connected to the investigation, and there is an additional hidden task that you can complete right away:
- Fridge victim's body - if you tell Kim that you've missed something during the autopsy and another look at the body is needed, you need to find a way to chill the body down. There is a refrigerator inside Doomed Commercial Area. Until you find it, you can safely step away from the body.
- Find the bullet before you get fooled - this is a hidden task that sheds completely new light on the investigation. To complete it, you'll need to complete a Legendary Perception check, and then an Easy Interfacing check.
- Send victim's body to processing - you can send the body away if you think that you've seen everything there is to it. Before you proceed with this step, make sure you've found the dead man's boots (Getting the Hanged Man's boots quest) and made the orb appear - if you decide to do it later, Kim will be away until the end of the day.
