On this page of the Disco Elysium, you will find a detailed walkthrough of the Getting the Hanged Man's boots side quest. In our walkthrough, we explain how to take the hanged man's boots off, how to clean them, and how to acquire a unique armor item, Fairweather T-500 Greaves.
Starting the task
In this task, you will acquire unique shoes that are part of the T-500 armor. They're worn by the hanged man in the back of the Whirling-In-Rags hostel.
You can unlock this task in 2 ways. The first method is to talk to Call Me Manana, the man sitting on a handrail near the protesting workers (northeast of the hostel). This is possible only after talking to Cuno about the remaining parts of the armor (task Where is the rest of the armor?).
The second option to start the task is to try to pull the shoes off the man and tell Kim that you would be happy to sell them.
At the end of the dialogue, the Interfacing skill will be activated, suggesting you steal the boots once the body is pulled down and Kim is not around.
Taking the boots off
You can get rid of Kim by going to your room or the cabin on the coast after 9 p.m. Kim will no longer accompany you. Don't use the bed though, just continue on your own.
Go to wherever the corpse is at the moment. It can be in following locations:
- The original crime scene at the back of Whirling-In-Rags.
- Refrigerator in the Doomed Commercial Area - you could move it there as part of a separate task Fridge victim's body.
When you try to get the boots, they will come off together with pieces of flesh, so you will have to clean them.
Head to the kitchen on the ground floor of Whirling-In-Rags. 2 additional conditions must be met:
- You can't go with Kim.
- The kitchen must be open.
It is best to deal with this activity immediately after taking the boots off, that is, between 9:00 p.m. and midnight.
Interact with a large pot on the stove (marked on the screenshot). Add soap and white vinegar, then boil the boots to clean them and get rid of the nasty smell (the second option shown in the screenshot).
Rewards for completing the task
When the cooking process is over, Fairweather T-500 Greaves will be added to your inventory. Wearing this item will increase Authority by 2 and decrease Composure by 1. You have acquired one of the T-500 armor elements.
In addition, you will receive 35 XP for completing this task.
