On this page of the Disco Elysium guide, you will find a detailed walkthrough of the Inspect Victim's Body task. We have included tips on where the important traces are and how to interpret them, how to obtain ammonia, and how to complete the inspection of the corpse hanging at the back of the Whirling-in-Rags hostel.
The game strongly suggests inspecting the corpse as an obligatory activity. In fact, this is optional and skipping this activity is linked to the What body? trophy. You would have to completely ignore the interaction with the hanging corpse and focus, among other things, on talking to Cuno and examining the footprints on the ground.

Traces and crime scene
You must conduct a preliminary visual inspection of the crime scene and examine the body of the man who was hanged behind the Whirling-In-Rags hostel.
Once you are at the crime scene, you should highlight any interactive objects in this area - one of which will be footprints that can be examined. If you pass the Visual Calculus skill check, Harry will be able to correctly estimate the number of traces left near the tree:
- Four pairs of work boots with steel reinforced toes in sizes 44, 44, 46, and 45-46;
- Hobnailed work boot in size 43;
- Work boot in size 41;
- A glowing outline of a work boot in size 46 - the footprints are twice as deep as the rest, the weight most likely exceeded 200 kilograms;
- Incorrect footprint of a work boot with a more worn right sole.
Obtaining ammonia
Approach the hangman and examine the body. Harry will vomit unless you pass the very difficult Endurance skill check.
Kim will give you a handkerchief. He will also tell you that this happens to everyone and that ammonia can help eliminate the unpleasant odor of a decomposing body.
The chemical component in question can be obtained in 2 ways:
- Walk up to the woman sitting by the Whirling-In-Rags hostel and ask her for ammonia - select the dialogue option marked in the screenshot. If you want, you can also ask for her gloves – she will gladly give them to you.
- Go to the Fritte kiosk - the entrance to it is east of Whirling-In-Rags. Ammonia can be purchased there.
After acquiring ammonia, return to the hanging corpse and try to pass the Endurance skill check.
The chance that Harry will pass it is really very small, but no need to worry about it. You will get access to the new thought: Volumetric Shit Compressor.
Internalizing a new thought
Go to the Thought Cabinet and select Volumetric Shit Compressor from the list on the right, then click the Internalize button.
Internalizing a new thought will take 30 minutes in the game world - it is recommended to take care of activities related to other tasks during that time.
Go back to the hanging corpse and try to pass the Endurance skill check again. This time your chances should be much better (72% as in our screenshot).
If you are worried that you'll fail this attempt too, save the game and, if necessary, reload it to try again.
Completing the examination of the hanging corpse
Now you have to examine the body - select all dialogue options and check all possible clues to get as much information as possible. They will be useful in the investigation. You will receive 70 XP.
