This update is aimed at modders. For immediate fun, try RA2YR Enhanced, an open mod included in and entirely made with RedModAlert SDK which you can use to start your own mods:

RedModAlert SDK has been updated with many fixes and improvements along with more tools, code and tutorials, completing the journey of enhancing the modding of Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge. This doesn't mean the story is over but that a reasonable milestone has been reached and new opportunities have become available!

RedModAlert SDK Fairy header

Fairy is the latest sprite editor (for .shp files) included in the SDK. Providing advanced functionality, it allows artists to mod the game much faster than ever before, without having to watch their every step for all sorts of pitfalls. Although mainly intended for converting already done artwork into game assets, Fairy also offers some basic drawing support mostly meant for retouches.

If you're new to spriting, you should also check out the new tutorials for a full introduction before you begin.

Another honorable mention is World-Altering Editor, the latest map editor made by Rampastring with the help of the community. It's not finished yet, but this is getting closer and closer to the hot spot, already becoming a good option for making new maps. For now, just a download link has been included in the SDK.

This project has not earned and never will not even one single dime. This was all done out of sheer love for the game. If any of this is useful to you, please support it by promoting it in your work so others will know about and benefit from all of this. A simple logo of any size will do. Not required, of course, but really appreciated. Help the good stuff stay alive or else trash will take over. Thank you and rejoice the fun of modding your favorite game with the best tools out there!

It says "Failed to initialize hardware rendering support. Switching to software rendering..." then crash when opening Fairy.exe. In a different computer it just crashes without any error message.

It means DirectX has failed to initialize in both hardware and software. Most likely SlimDX.dll (which is a DirectX wrapper for .NET used by Fairy, Terral and Yvory) is blocked by your security software and not allowed to work with DirectX.

How can I fix that? The one on my laptop says the "failed to initialize..." and the one on my desktop shows an error box but nothing is written. The only thing I have is Windows Defender and Firewall. In the Firewall, I could only allow the Fairy.exe, the SlimDX.dll doesn't show.

Try installing these:
Microsoft.com
Microsoft.com

Here's some other clues that might help:
- Make sure the system requirements are met.
- The tools and their components must not be blocked by a 3rd party software such as an antivirus or security suit software.
- Don't run these tools in a virtual machine, they won't work. Most virtual machines don't have 3D rendering support due to legal and technical restraints.
- Don't run Fairy/Terral/Yvory on a x86 system, they won't even start. These are x64 applications.
- Ask for help in the C&C community or on a tech support forum, there are many skilled people there who can help you identify the problem better than I can.

I hope this will help, and thanks for trying out these tools! Hopefully you will get them working and start making some great new things with them very soon!

The DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) worked! Thank you for the help! I don't know how the programs work because only the Fairy.exe isn't working everything else was fine. But it's working now thank you!

I can't add a custom unit when using the custom.ini file. there are some modded units i want to use but it does not seem to take effect in the game. Hope i get some clarity on how to work this out :)
Definitely enjoying this mod.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

Adding new units to the mod can be fairly complex and custom.ini was only meant for quick tweaks.

For example, to register a new vehicle you have to declare it in VehicleTypes, then define the vehicle entry, in rulesmd.ini. You will also need to create an entry in artmd.ini, so custom.ini is not enough. The art file(s) for the unit must be placed in the game's folder (or inside one of the mix files) and you should also have a cameo for it to be displayed in the sidebar. Moreover, if you wish the computer players to use the new unit, you have to create entries in aimd.ini too.

For such complicated modding the best way is to use RedModAlert SDK and edit the mod as you wish with the tools provided there.

Thanks SCIP but I wasn't away. Doing this for fun whenever I can, not 24/7, so it may seem that way. I'm actually trying to release more stuff altogether as a package to boost the community but this takes time to do it right (Yvory's been upgraded as well), hope I can do it by summer or fall...
