Our Edan Kwan shared his locally running AI assistant setup. Check it out if you want to learn how he did it. Everything is running locally without sending anything to a third party platform. The assistant also uses his own voice, and it is a good touch for his kids to ask questions and hearing a familiar voice. What's your thought?
🎉 Introducing My Custom Local AI Assistant for Kids! 🎉 Turn the sound on 🔊 and check out the demo of my locally running AI assistant, featuring my own voice(w/Cantonese Accent)! One thing I love about this set up is that everything is running locally. It can run without internet for privacy reason and use handy arcade buttons to control instead of using a voice control like "Hey Google...". Behind the Scenes Tech and Hardware: 🖥 Computer: I repurposed an old M1 Mac mini from my office. Any Mac/PC with sufficient VRAM for your LLM model will do the job. 🔘 Input Buttons: Using my old Palette Core arcade buttons, but a keyboard or a DIY Arduino setup works just as well. 🧠 LLM: Running Llama 3 8b instruct. It’s perfect for general conversation with low VRAM usage. Ollama acts as the middleware. 🔗 AlwaysReddy: This Python tool integrates everything seamlessly. 🎙 Speech-To-Text: Implemented FasterWhisper for quick and accurate transcription. 🗣 Text-To-Speech: Utilizing Piper, with all training and inference done locally for privacy and safety. Plus, I can train it with my own voice - no need to upload anything online! That’s it! I hope you find this project as exciting as I do. 😉
