There are probably just a few people who haven’t heard of Jurassic Park or Jaws. Both of Steven Spielberg's productions already have a cult following and have made their mark in modern pop culture, which is why they are so widely known. But not everyone knows that their creator came up with Jurassic Park as a sequel to Jaws in his own way, as he discussed in an interview with The New Yorker.

I have no embarrassment in saying that with Jurassic I was really just trying to make a good sequel to Jaws. On land. It’s shameless – I can tell you that now.
Actually, it makes sense, since both productions deal with monsters that humans face – some with oceanic ones, others with land ones. For Steven Spielberg, Jaws was a groundbreaking film that opened many doors for him, and when he moved to land after parting ways with the ocean, he created another major blockbuster for cinema, this time Jurassic Park, which was the beginning of another great movie series.
But just because Jurassic Park is a "sequel" of sorts to Jaws doesn't mean we can expect a crazy crossover in which humans have to deal not only with dinosaurs, but also with sharks. Rather, Spielberg's vision of a sequel is simply that the two films deal with similar subject matter, so for him, as their author, they are in some way related.
