Thanks to an article by Game Informer magazine, we learned a lot of new things about the difficulty levels in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the latest installment of the popular RPG series by BioWare.

The developers want players to be able to adjust the game to their own preferences. Starting the game, we will choose between several classic options.

  1. The Storyteller variant will focus on easy challenges and will be aimed at players mainly interested in the plot.
  2. The Nightmare level is designed for those seeking extreme challenges, and Adventurer will be something in between these two options.
  3. Furthermore, there will be an Unbound option that enables players to manually adjust different aspects of the gameplay, essentially creating their own level of difficulty.

Within this last option, we will decide for ourselves how much the game will help us, for instance, with exploration or aiming (auto-aim should even be available). We will also establish there the difficulty of parrying attacks, the amount of damage enemies will inflict, and the damage we will inflict ourselves. There will also be the possibility to configure the aggressiveness of enemies, as well as the option to enable character immortality.

Recently, this kind of difficulty level configuration options are becoming more and more popular. Last year, we had the opportunity to see them in a different Electronic Arts game called Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, however, seems to develop these ideas much further than what we have seen so far.

In a conversation with the editors of Game Informer, BioWare devs stated that they don't perceive such wide options for configuring the difficulty level as cheats. These options aim to ensure that all players, regardless of their skill level or physical abilities, will be able to play Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is being developed for PC, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5. The premiere will take place in the fall of this year.
