Doom in Notepad is so Crazy Even John Romero is Impressed
Doom can even be played in Notepad and at 60 fps. John Romero is impressed, which may encourage other developers to implement more crazy ideas. The release of Doom.txt is just a few days away.
Independent developer, passionately creating experimental programs, launched the original Doom in Notepad. The game runs amazingly smoothly and will be available for anyone willing to check it out in a few days.
Doom.txt - that's a new one
The project has been presented yesterday on Twitter by a user nicknamed Samperson. The author assures, that the footage was not sped up - the game reportedly runs at 60 frames per second. The whole thing is very impressive, although the footage itself is a bit glitchy. The blame for this, however, can be placed on Twitter rules, which allow for videos to be published at a maximum of 40 fps - resulting in the effect as seen in the video.
What's more, Samperson announced continuation of work. As a result, in a few days we will see the official release of Doom.exe's port. The author assures that Notepad's code has not been modified for the purpose of the project, so the game will not affect the operation of Windows components and anyone willing to test it personally.
The video immediately conquered Twitter, gaining more than 100 thousand likes in 24 hours. The video did not escape the attention of John Romero - co-founder of id Software and author of the original Doom. He commented on the video in one word: "Unbelievable".. The praise of the famous developer will certainly help Samperson in his future career.
Doom is everywhere
For a few years now, the original Doom has been the target of the "Will it run DOOM?" campaign. Independent developers are outdoing themselves in porting the game to the most unusual platforms possible. A perfect example is the version of the game running in Excel.
In June we were able to watch a video showing Doom running on a LEGO brick. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. A year ago we could read about Tweet2Doom (allowing for the game to run on Twiter), and even earlier about Doom and Skyrim running on a pregnancy test. We are curious to see what else can be used to run this FPS classic.
