Above - a beautiful image that happens to be scary at the same time. It’s Dear Esther as imagined by Midjourney’s Artificial Intelligence image generator. Thanks to those who tagged us in this, fascinating stuff.

Anyway, hi, hello! With the new year upon us (a big one for us!), we decided to spruce up the look of this newsletter a bit, too. Now it is more aligned with our website and looks even more TCR-like. We hope you like it! a So much to cover in this first newsletter of 2023 that enough of the intro and let’s jump straight to it!

TCR Christmas Do 🎄🍸

It was luxurious, it was messy, it was everything we could have hoped for. There were games, cocktails and food galore, a dancefloor and a grade II listed mansion. 💅 Because nothing is too good for members of our studio!
Huge thanks, as always, to the ever-fabulous duo of Sophie and Zoe, our Office Management team, for putting it all together.

Watch the full report of our shenanigans here 🎥
A special message from TCR to the Trans community

Following the UK government's blocking of the gender recognition reform bill, The Chinese Room has put out a statement on social media re-affirming that this is a studio that welcomes and values trans people within the games industry and beyond.

Trans developers play a hugely important role in our studio. Today and always - we stand together with, and support our Trans colleagues. Their right to self-determination deserves our understanding and respect. Trans rights are human rights!

EXCLUSIVE - Talk Recordings at Unwrap '22
Two of the 'Roomers were invited to the Unwrap Festival in Belgium to give talks about their experiences in game development. We are now releasing these exclusively to you, our dear newsletter readers.
Our Principal Environment Artist Dominique Buttiens gives his insights into storytelling and working as a team as an environment artist. His talk is called 'Environment Art: Beyond Modelling & Texturing'. TCR's Lead Programmer Louis presented a talk all about the optimising of code in Little Orpheus and the lessons learnt. We hope you enjoy!

"Meet The Department" series now public
You, our dear newsletter readers, have been able to enjoy these interviews before everybody else! But we have now made them accessible to the whole public, too. "Meet the Department" series chats with members of our studio and what their every day looks like whilst working in Art, Audio, Design, or Programming. Huge thanks to our brilliant interviewees and we hope you found these useful! You can see them all in one place and subscribe to our YouTube channel whilst you're at it.

TCR Spotlight - Karin Kunrath
Who makes video games? People make video games. The invisible heroes behind the titles you love. #TCRSpotlight celebrates one of our studio members every month, in a form of a post about them!
This month, please meet our beloved Senior Project Manager Karin Kunrath 👱‍♀️🦎🐈🥰

Karin's journey to games has been a fascinating one. A Czech born in Germany, her first work gig was as a receptionist in Ibiza. Can only imagine the stories! She then worked as a hotel animator in the Canaries, played floorball (a kind of indoor hockey) in Switzerland, and was employed by a hostel in Portugal before moving to the UK 10 years ago. What a life!
Here she joined American Express and after 8 years of self-admittedly "climbing the corporate career ladder", she craved a change of environment and industry. Coincidently, she came across a posting for a Project Manager at TCR, and since she has always enjoyed games from a young age it seemed like an interesting career change. We're lucky to have her! Now she resides with a little menagerie of a cat, lizard, fish in the pond, and cheeky robins.

What career advice can Karin give? "Don't be intimidated by not having game industry experience. There are a lot of transferable skills in Project and Product Management and it's always good to get a fresh set of eyes on things that have “always been done this way”." Very true!

What's Karin up to outside of work? A lot - exercise classes, squash, table tennis. Outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and wildlife photography. And whenever she can squeeze it in - travel travel travel. 🧳🏖🏂
Re: games - she says she recently enjoyed The Maquette and STRAY.
Other favourites are The Witness Game, The Witcher, and Diablo.

A song that relaxes Karin? Ingrid Michaelson – Keep Breathing. Dreamy!

Huge thanks to Karin for participating in #TCRSpotlight, it's so cool to read people's stories on how they end up in games and their journey here thus far.
Dear Esther Reimagined

A Level Artist for CD Projekt Red Valentin Baguirov remade parts of Dear Esther using Megascans assets.
Don't get us wrong, we love our rough around the edges graphics, but this is truly astonishing stuff!

See more of these cool experimentations here 🎨
EXCLUSIVE - “Weird and Obscure” games - as reviewed by our Li
Our Junior QA Tester Li Brady has created a YouTube channel where they will be posting cool analyses of video games. They begin with the 1997 cult classic R?MJ: The Mystery Hospital. Ah, wouldn't be a 'Roomer if they didn't have an interest in cool, obscure, old-school games that just have that je ne sais quoi. Watch Li's awesome informative review here and give subscribe to their cool little channel, too!

EXCLUSIVE - "Szrot" Recommendation
Every month our newsletter recommends a videogame that our studio members love. Often these are arthouse indies that we wish to put a spotlight on. You can now see all of them in one convenient thread here!

This one's not out yet, but has definitely caught the attention of a few of us. Who knows, if more of us Wishlist it then perhaps it'll come out quicker? Szrot is a driving game about the underappreciated cars and cultures of Eastern Europe! We're intrigued.
Wishlist "Szrot" here 🚗
EXCLUSIVE - TCR Friday Jukebox - The Power of Friendship
Every Friday we at The Chinese Room have a different music playlist spinning, the theme for which gets set by the person who got voted as having submitted the best song the previous week! We love sharing these with you, our dear newsletter readers!

Our Environment Artist Gabi came up with this most adorable theme: "Time to buddy up. Any songs about friendships. You can go as platonic of a song if you want." The results are delightful and very cosy. Do subscribe to our Spotify channel, it has a bunch of really great playlists there already and will always be updated.

"They Play Games" Episode 1 Live
Awesome colleagues doing awesome things. 💜 Our sister studio Auroch Digital's community / social manager extraordinaire Ladell is putting together a brilliant project - "They Play Games" is a podcast for non gender conforming folks within the game industry. Episode 1 is now out, click on the thumbnail above and give it a listen, some fascinating stuff in there.
Sumo - Best Companies Award three times in a row
No big deal, only our parent company Sumo Group receiving the highest - three-star rating - for the Best Companies three years in a row! 💅
We are proud, we feel the care, and are so happy all of it gets recognised.
TCR FC FTW!
They know how to paint, how to code, they build entire worlds, and populate them with their designs. On top of all that, they know how to have a ball on a football pitch!
TCR FC takes place every Wednesday, with pints afterward, of course. Love to see it. 💚⚽
